Mexico and the GEF

General Overview

  • Mexico is pleased to host of the Fifth GEF Assembly in Cancun, Mexico. This event will give us an opportunity to promote those projects that have been financed with GEF resources.
  • With the support of the GEF, our country has established best practices in developing ambitious projects such as the Program on Protected Natural Areas, which include the Sian Ka'an Biosphere, Contoy Island and the Cozumel Coral Reef, all located in the state of Quintana Roo.
  • Mexico’s historic national portfolio includes 54 projects for more than US$ 450 million in direct grants (23 projects in biodiversity, 19 in climate change, 6 multifocal, 4 in Persistent Organic Pollutants and 2 in international waters).
    • As to the Small Grants Program (SGP), Mexico, as an upgraded country, has received more than US$ 13 million for more than 577 NGOs and community based projects.
  • Additionally, Mexico has been part of 30 regional and global projects representing more than US$ $196 million in indirect grants (10 projects in biodiversity, 7 in climate change, 5 multifocal, 6 in international waters and 2 in Persistent Organic Pollutants).
  • The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit of Mexico is responsible for coordinating the relationship between Mexico and the GEF and holds the following positions:
    • GEF Political and Operational Focal Point
    • GEF Council Member, representing the constituency of Central America (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama) and Venezuela.
